Welcome to Penwick!
We’re so glad you’ve joined us. Penwick is a new literary roleplay community founded on creativity and community, and you’re here right at the start!
If you're not sure what to do now, here are a few things to do:
- Begin or submit your character application (that's the very first thing to do!)
- Check out the Penwick school lore. Let us know if there's anything missing that's important to know to write a student here!
- Join our Discord server if you haven't already.
- Once your character is approved, make your first post! There's a sorting ceremony post HERE if you'd like to write your sorting or reaction to Penwick's new headmistress's opening speech.

You can now get your wand at Ollivanders in Diagon Alley!

- To stay true to lore, Ollivander will only provide wands with unicorn hair, dragon heartstring, or phoenix feather cores. In the future an additional shop will open in Brynwell which offers its own quiz and a much more extensive variety of wand cores.
- Your answers in the quiz will guide the result but not wholly determine it.
- Some texts vary subtly per user, but currently the number of variations is fairly low. This will be expanded in the future.
- Currently it is free to get your wand, in the future this will cost money.
- Once you've got your wand, you're stuck with it, unless you bribe me or June to reset it for you 😛
- I'm working on creating unique images for wands but as you can imagine, creating consistent images for 33 wand woods with variations for each wand wood takes a bunch of time, even with AI image generation.

It's Lock-In Night!
Once a year, on February 28th, Penwick loosens its usual curfews to allow the students to stay out late in designated areas of the castle. Common rooms stay open for games, midnight snacks, and very little sleep. The rules are simple: stay within the approved areas and be present for roll call in your common room before the end of breakfast the next morning. Where you choose to spend the night is considered a deeply revealing decision.

Upgrades
- Site is now on a new server running on far more recent software and hardware
- Server costs have also been lowered (not that anyone except me and June would care but, whatever)
- The new server is based in the EU, so it may be a touch slower for US/Canadian users but, I am not expecting too much of a slowdown here
Other stuff
- The spell shop is ready! It's been a lot of work, but you are now able to buy all spells that are on the spell list directly from the shop. You can find it under the "Rules & Systems" forum.
- If you want to request a refund on a spell or ability you bought, you can now click the refund button in either shop. This will send a refund request to me and June which needs either of us to approve it by clicking a button in the moderator control panel, so it's not an instant refund, and that's on purpose (so you can't buy & refund spells/abilities endlessly as you need them)
- Population weighting/house balancing has been added to the sorting ceremony. Existing users can remain in their current houses, but new users may be sorted into their 2nd or 3rd choice if the population is unevenly spread across houses
- I've updated the UI for showing the spells/abilities/inventory a user has when you go to a user's page. It's not quite yet where I want it to be, but it's a bit more compact than giant tables
- Added some new abilities and spells to create a path for being able to make Inferni:
Thanatologist (ability tier 2), allows memory extraction spell to be used on corpses that are no more than 7 days old.
Corpus Resurrege (restricted tier 2 spell, requires Thanatologist) temporarily (for about 15 seconds) revives a corpse.
Mortambulus (restricted tier 3 spell, requires Corpus Resurrege) - steals life from a living thing and imbues the revived corpse with false life.
